“Can Nations Be Healed?”
~ by Apostle Dr. Peggy Elliott © October1st, 2018
“...on each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing 12 crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:2
Over the past few months, I have challenged those who read my monthly column, to think about healing in unconventional ways: healing on the streets and the healing of a total congregation, for examples. This month, I want to challenge you to consider healing again in an unconventional way – the healing of nations.
Can a nation be healed? Let’s keep in mind that the only reason for something or someone to need healing is due to sickness, sometimes sickness leads to death.
By every stretch of the imagination, most readers would agree with me that our nation, most nations, need to be healed. Power hungry leaders, confusion as to who are the allies and who are the enemies of a nation; lies, hush money, black-on-black crime, high abortion rates, conversations being taped without the consent and knowledge of those in meetings, illegal immigration, tell-all books, trillions of dollars in debt, sex trafficking, the building of illegal warheads, etc. etc. All of these systemic issues speak volumes to the need for nations to heal. It begs the question of can a nation heal?
I believe that the most important assessment one can make that will accurately measure the health of a nation is to ask two questions, “Who does the President of a nation say is the real Commander-in-Chief? What role does effective fervent prayer play within the lives of the leaders of a nation?”
FREDERICK DOUGLAS INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS
In August, I had the pleasure joining a group of individuals who were invited by special invitation, to participate in a two- day event that was hosted by The Frederick Douglas Institute, Executive Director, Dean Nelson. The purpose of the meeting was for the participants to become better acquainted and educated on important policies and issues affecting African American people. We attended briefings held at the Family Research Council and The White House.
Each participant was a Believer and was considered to be a person of influence in their city, some within their state and some had national and international responsibilities. Our challenge was to learn how to take the word of God and apply it to issues and policies impacting our communities and ministries.
One afternoon, while riding the van back to our hotel, I decided to query my peers, asking two questions, “Can a nation be healed?” and “What would a healed nation look like?” Half of those in attendance were riding in the van. Many of them participated in what turned out to be, quite an invigorating discussion. Here are some of the responses:
“People would not be trying to control other people. One group would not have dominion over another.”
“We would be a praying nation.” James 5:13, “Is anyone of you in trouble? Let them pray.”
“There needs to be a change in the government. Prayer begins at the top.”
“We must live James 1:22, ‘Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive ourselves, do what it says.”
We must become new creatures and live and commit to living, speak and act like men and women of God.” Colossians 3:15: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”
“We need to understand our identity, who we, (African Americans) were created to become. “In Him, we live, move and have our being.” Acts 17:28
“We must identify ourselves. Self-was never God’s original intent for our lives. Chris denied himself.”
We are living the Sinai pattern. We have become weak and fearful like the Israelites. Instead of going to the mountaintop to hear from God their selves, they sent Moses. We have allowed fear of hearing from God ourselves and it has become a pattern of behavior. We must learn to hear from God ourselves.
“One nation under God...really? What does that mean? I ask because a spirit of division seems to be the soup de jour of the day.”
"We would become God-aware vs. self-aware.”
“We would have healthy, thriving churches. They would not be pulpit-centered, but pew-centered, body ministry.”
“We must operate as the tentacles of the kingdom in every area of society. We would not be racially controlled but conscious controlled. Not gender controlled.
“We would ack like God told those in Galatians 3:28, ‘There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.’"
Economics would be in every community. The dollars would stay within 10-15 miles radius within a community.”
Very interesting comments. It was a discussion that took on a life of own, and could have continued for hours. 2 Chronicles 7:14 "If my people who are called by my name with humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then, I will hear from heaven and I will forgive their sin and heal their land.” This scripture is almost always quoted when the discussion arises pertaining to the role of the body of Christ in healing any land, any nation.
We read it, we believe it, but there is little evidence that we actually live it. I believe that if the body of Christ were healthier than it is today, and individuals who professed Christ as their personal Savior ran for political seats as high ranking as the President of a country, we would be more likely to have a healed nation than not.
LEAVES THAT HEAL NATIONS
In the New Jerusalem, there is the new and better Eden. There is a tree of life, as well as the river of life. In reviewing Revelation 12:2, we see that the number twelve is significant. We are told that there are twelve gates to the city and that the streets are paved with gold. Diverse and seasonal fruits will be on one tree. The food from the tree of life gives life to those who eat and brings healing to all those in need, even its leaves have a purpose, healing to people, healing to nations.
The waters we experience here on earth are all muddy. In heaven, they are clear and refreshing. Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, but be used for medicine. The tree is symbolic of Jesus Christ, and all of the blessings of his salvation; and the leaves for the healing of nations. What will this healing look like? God’s favor and His presence will supply all good to the inhabitants of that world. There will be no night; no affliction or rejection in the new Jerusalem.
Can a nation be healed? According to Revelation 12:2, the answer is ‘yes.’ When will we see healed nations? Over in the New Jerusalem.
