THE BUSINESS NUGGET:
The Weave vs. The Natural
Lately in today's society there has been this big battle especially on social media: the weave vs. the natural. I'm just going to take a little time to touch on the issue because It's my industry. I am a Licensed Advanced Cosmetologist as well as a Licensed Cosmetologist Instructor.
Although I really don't need to do an exclamation for people who have an issue with women who wear Hair Extensions, I will. Let's talk about this this NATURAL TREND. Many have said that they have become natural because Relaxers took out their hair. That actually is a Myth. Relaxers don't take out the Hair, people take out the hair. There are 2 types of people who take out the hair:
1) The YouTube Beautician who is unlearned, untrained and untested. For example in coloring hair, they have not been trained to do a PPD skin test. PPD is classified as Purified Protein Derivative. This particular method of testing is used to detect a concealed, underlying tuberculosis (TB) infection. When an individual is infected with Tuberculosis, they become very sensitive to certain strands of bacteria.
2) You yourself, because you feel: if you purchase the box relaxer from the store that says no-lye and follow those directions; you can do as well as the beautician. But guess what: You are also unlearned, untrained and untested in this industry. Did you know that a Relaxer that is advertised as no-lye is actually a lie because you need a little lye to straighten the hair. Also because you've never attended Cosmetology school, you have no true knowledge on how to properly apply it, which causes over-processing, breakage and damage.
The reason it's so important for you to visit a Professional Stylist is because we did not just study how to style hair, but we have studied many of the same courses Nurses study. For example; Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Infectious Control, Sanitation, Chemistry etc...Yes, we have to study ph vs. the alkaline of the hair.
Natural Hair is defined as: hair who's texture has not been altered by a Chemical ie.... Relaxer, Color, Color Rinse, Permanent Wave etc...If you're covering up gray hair, you are not natural. I see no issue with this trend except for those who refuse comb their hair. If you're going be Natural, then make yourself presentable by combing and maintaining the hair. If you don't want to comb your hair then find a Professional Stylist who specializes in Locks. Locks are beautiful when they a properly maintained. Don't criticize the sistas that choose to weave it.
Now to discuss this WEAVE INDUSTRY: It is a very lucrative industry; from Models to Actresses to Singers to Doctors to Politicians and to the every day Woman. Some women just like hair, some women have an Auto Immune Disease called Alopecia Areata in which one's own immune system mistakenly attacks their hair follicles. Some women who receive radiation due to Cancer follicles have been destroyed and they're embarrassed about having no hair. Whatever the reason; women have every right to wear whatever extensions or wigs they desire. Where I do have a problem with some women who wear weaves; is when a woman's weave is paid for and her bills are not, her children are hungry, the child or the children's hair is all over their heads, yet the mom has a 24 inch weave.
Weaves, Wigs or Installments are not just worn by women, but by men who suffer from hair issues as well. Hair replacement or Hair installments has been around for men for centuries, but we call it a Toupee.
Brothers, in closing and I say this with all love; remember when you are criticizing women about their installs, some of you are wearing installs as well because you're uneasy about allowing your gray to show, so your Barber is performing a Color install on your hair/beard which is called a BLACKOUT. You have just as much right as the Sistas to do whatever is need to make yourself look sexy and presentable.
Know that God doesn't care if the hair is straight or curly, natural or relaxed, short or long, bald or close-cut, weaved or no weave; you are not a Nazarite. There is no power in your Blackout, Wig, Weave, Colored, Relaxed or Silk out; Either God called you or He didn't, Either you're anointed or you're not; Only man looks at the outward but God looks at the heart.
~ Editor's Note : The answer? Just WEAVE them alone! lol Blessings!
